Diving in El Colony

Diving in El Colony

The enchantment of the diving area of the Colony comes from its history - what it is full with legends of buried treasures - and of its marine beautiful channel.

Temperature average of the water 27 ºC (Spring, summer, autumn 28 ºC, winter 23 ºC) and the water half transparency (visibility) is the 40 meters.

In El Colony we can find schools of tarpons, spadefish, jacks, grunts, schoolmasters and yellowtail snappers. Nassau groupers, black groupers and barracudas plows frequently found, also there it plows turtles, eagle rays and sometimes sharks.

Others diving zones are Los Barcos Hundidos, which are remains of sunken ships scattered on an extensive are between 6 and 9 meters (20 or 30 feet) deep y Los Indios, known for its vertical walls and big coral hillocks with sand beds.

El Colony International Scuba-Diving Centre

The Colony International Diving Center of Puertosol, is in the Isla de la Juventud, to the Southwest of Cuban, to some 29 miles of New Gerona, capital of that municipality in the island, distant some 42 kms of the International Airport Rafael Cabrera Mustelier .

Diving Center El Colony

A multilock hyperbaric chamber is available at the Diving Center. To physician specialized in hyperbaric medicine is ready to provide preventive services and diving diseases treatment.

Colony diving zone is located within the limits of the breath-taking paradise of Tip Frances National Marinates Park. This comprises of 6 km. (4 thousands) of coast, between Tip Flints and Tip Frances. The zone is very well protected with to remarkable environmental stability, thus having an exuberant reef development.

The Colony International Diving Center located in this sport port offers diving courses with aqualung for all the levels, with internationally grateful certificates.

An international competition of submarine picture, Photosub, takes place in this sport port every year, given the client's demand, with the different specialties and prizes.

El Colony Diving Sites, Places, Locations

The International Diving Center El Colony is the first Cuba diving zone and has 56 sites of high level diving; some of them in areas of give you and colorful corals populations, gorgonians and sponges.

Among the most spectacular sites you can find are: Pared de Coral Negro, Tunel del Amor, Cueva Azul, El Pasaje Escondido, Cueva de los Sabalos, Piedra de Coral, EL Salto, Ancla del Pirata, Paraiso de las Levisas and Pequeño Reino.

"Pared de Coral Negro"

Depth range: 35 meters

This site is famous for its black coral found at a depth of 100ft.. Brightly colored tube and small basket sponges as well as magnificent coral formations including elkhorn, staghorn and brain are spread out throughout the wall. These waters are inhabited by tarpon, snappers, hamlets and queen parrotfish, yellowtail and gray angelfish. Moray eels can also be found in wall crevices

"Cueva Azul"

Depth range: 40 meters

Descending to a depth of 130ft. you find a hole in a rock about 10ft. diameter covered with small silver glassfish. This is tarpon territory. From the hole you head out to the outer wall fascinated by the contrasting blues. The water in the gully appears as grayish blue; within the hole it has a dark blue hue, almost black, and looking out past the wall the sea turns into a bright turquoise tone.

From this point you ascend up the face of the drop off where you see all kinds of gorgonians.

Marine life becomes more abundant when you approach the top of the wall. The excellent visibility of this site may encourage novice divers to be overconfident and take a deeper dive than they are mentally ready for. A dive this depth is only recommended for advanced divers.

"Tunel del amor"

Small tunnel with enormous rosy sponges in heart form and black coral. Among the fish the rabirrubias is plentiful, fish pilot blue, mere guají, breastplates, cuberas. Depth oscillates between 13 and 35 m.

"Valle de los Guacamayos"

Depth range: 35 meters
Location: (21º 34,926 N - 83º 10,427 W)

This point is located to 15 meters deep this formed by an abrasive inclined plain, with coralline bottom - rocky, ridges and buckets and solid coralline to the foot of the scarp (wall or continental bank) and an exuberant scarp where the area but charismatic it is among the 30-35 meters being observed great diversity of sponges.
