Birds in the Cuban NatureThe birds in Cuba add 369 wild species and of free life, that belong to 208 genres, to 63 families and to 21 orders. There register 217 terrestrial species, 69 tied ones to fresh water and 83 marinas. The first Cuban birds, possible ancestors of the current ones, came to territories that today form Cuba with posteriority to 42 - 40 million years behind. The current fauna of birds of Cuba has his origin principally in North America. Also it has origin in Central America, especially of the typical species of the tropics. The influence of birds of South America is very much minor. Among endemic bird species in Cuba stands out the Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) for being the smallest bird of the world with only 6,4 cm long. For the beauty, also there stands out the Cuban Trogon (Priotelus temnurus) that is the national bird of Cuba, the Cuban Tody (Todus multicolor), the Cuban Green Woodpecker (Xiphidiopicus percussus), the Cuban Parakeet (Aratinga euops), the Grey-headed Quail-dove (Geotrygon caniceps) and the Blue-headed Quail-dove (Starnoenas cyanocephala). Species endemic to Cuban of more recent discovery include: the Zapata Wren (Ferminia cerverai), the Cuban Sparrow or Zapata Sparrow (Torreornis inexpectata) and the Zapata Rail (Cyanolimnas cerverai), brought in 1926-1927 for the Spanish naturalist (Fermín Zanón Cervera) in Sierra Maestra.
